About Me
I am from Shanghai, China. Came to the US in 1989, right after the student movement. US embassy was shutdown for a few weeks during the June 4th movement. I got my visa immediately after the embassy reopened. Before that I encountered some hardship trying to find a sponsor to come to the US, but an old neighbor of my grandfather came to the rescue.
My grandfather [ 倪德昭 ] was director general of YMCA in NingBo [ a costal city in China ] in the 1940's, there was a neighbor with a large family [ last name Yeh ], there were 7,8 children in the Yeh family, but the husband passed away early, they were having a hard time with lot of young kids. So grandfather got a laundary job for the mother and arranged the olderst son to work in the YMCA to reduce the family burden. They remembered the good things grandpa did for them, after 1949, they moved to Taiwan, the 3rd son came to the US and got a PHD, then worked at EPA. For 40 years, he was searching for our family. By 1989, grandpa was in hospital, I was applying for graduate school in the US, but couldn't find a sponsor, without that the school won't be able to let me come. We had some relatives also in Taiwan, yet they wouldn't help. But finally the 3rd son of the Yeh family got in touch with us and found out my situation, he immediately sent sponsorship document to Indiana Univ. and I got accepted by the graduate school and was able to continue my education in the US.
I got my Master's degree from Indiana University at Bloomington IN. Majored in computer science. I worked at Georgia State University, AJC, AT&T and other companies as a Sr. software developer, specialized in Java programming and web development. Currently I am in Atlanta Georgia. I'm now a US citizen, so are my parents here.
Learned Java on my own and have been doing a lot of programming on the subjects that interest me, one of them is computer music, so I wrote an AI music program to automatically generate music, it's like a volcano, automatically produce hundreds/thousands of tunes and I just pick the best ones [ like diamonds ] to compile them into several albums. If you are interested, you can find them here. I wrote another Java Swing app to automatically play the online game : Bejeweled. It could dynamically take screenshots in realtime and recognize the colors then came up with the best strategy to score points by auto clicking on the screen, I got kicked out of the site because it won too many games and they realized it was beyond human capability to play so efficiently, and robot players are not allowed, I was happy because I could write a program and it did better than human. I didn't know they were detecting robot players, otherwise, I could deley the robot response time to imitate human behavior ^_^ !
My other interests include martial art and Latin dancing, it's a good way to work out with music, guys like me sit in front of computers for too long. Given opportunity I'd like to spend time on AI, training computers to learn how to solve problems.
Looking back, the invention of GATE is like an accident, one night, I was watching TV, it happens to be showing "Rise of the Hackers" on PBS, and I happened to have some spare time, so I told myself, this was a problem that I could solve, turn something obvious into obscure, then step by step I tinkered with this idea and put it into programming, finally it became reality. So, two [ GATE authentication, GATE encryption ] down, N - 2 more [ problems ] to go ^_* !
